  I am 54 this year, have a wonderful wife and four great kids, and a yellow labrador puppy. Most remote solo camp sites, Iceland, and Sinai Desert. Far out place where it was really remote, East Africa, just beyond the horizon of any civilization (yep, I was there in 1972 before AIDS and most of the bad stuff). Most spectacular scenery, Chamonix to Entreves via High Mountain Gondola next to Mt. Blanc over the Mer de Glas. Favorite place to be, anywhere outdoors with my wife and kids. My gear, a mix of old reliable friends that have aged along with me, my ash shaft REI Ice axe, Kelty Tioga backpack (over 30 years old), Silva compass, and Titanium Primus Stove (don't bother looking for the one I got, you can't get in North America and they don't make them anymore) and my Zeiss Monocular from East Berlin (yep, I was there before the Wall came down). Rules to live by in the outdoors, be prepared, always carry the ten essentials, ALWAYS. Hike at the pace of your slowest member, whether it be a child or adult. Never attempt a peak if the weather is bad, the peak will be there when the weather clears, but you might not be if your dead. Sing silly songs with your kids when your hiking, even when they are older, and hold them close and let them soar, they grow so very fast.
