It's not that there's anything wrong with it, but 8's are notorious for kinking the rope, getting and staying too hot, and general lack of control from not enough friction. They were a fantastic innovation 30 years ago, but now a normal tubular belay device (to use the non-brand-specific name) is better. Spend the money and get an ATC.

I don't want to bag on you man. Even though a Figure-eight kinks rope, it still has it's place like every other piece of gear on this site. - First of all these are a piece of history and they have been helping people in the mountains for ages. - Second of all if all you are doing is rapping a figure eight is pretty useful. it provides mor friction than most belay devices and that means a more controled rap. Don't just discredit this piece of gear because it's old.
