Be prepared for a change in packs

Ranked #1459 - Weekend Packs (3000-4500 cu in)
September 8, 2008
The Maestro is an exodus from conventional packs due to its collar U-bar (rather than shoulder straps) and high mobility grade, conceivably making it THE extreme pack. In order to utilize these features extensive setup and re-fitting IS necessary, which is a hassle although post setup you will know what every adjustment strap can do to relieve pressure by redistribution to either your hips, chest, or shoulders. I am 5'11" and purchased the Medium, however I have broad shoulders so ideally i would recommend getting the Large size collar as there is a slight pressure point on my shoulders. That's the problem with the multiple (6 or so) adjustments, decision complexity should be tackled by the designer not the end-user. Furthermore, the custom fit shoulder collar and waist belt are held together with velco which in my opinion does not perform well under load. As with any pack the weight must be redistributed to the hips via the scandium tubes and waist belt, thus the horizontal adjustment behind the waist belt must be ultra taught. The pack can carry 18 kg (38 pounds) providing at max 6 days hiking (if you pack well!). Also the shoulder collar is very difficult to mold to your upper body in a way that the max surface area is in contact at all times, again especially as the velco comes unstuck in places. There is no doubt that the pack adds mobility, looks wicked and is durable, however it is lacking in comfort if you plan on hiking heavy (21-25% body weight) and so i would then suggest the larger Solitude if your set on a MH pack. For all its features they somehow forgot cushioning on the straps and belt so be sure to fit the velco parts with maximum tension (ie. you can barely get into them). Lastly, the reason why im informing more on how to use this pack, is for all its shortcomings, id probably buy it again (well the bigger Solitude anyway) - as packs will migrate to external frames with greater setting flexibility and body contouring.
