works but clogs in cloudy water

Yes, the siphon works, but in even mildly cloudy water in a river running full with late spring runoff it clogged within an hour to only a few drops per minute. Filling a 5 gal jug took overnight and all day. Multiple cleanings with the supplied pad was necessary to restore the flow. After 5 days of repeated cleanings - lightly as possible - the filter diameter was at the minimum necessary for safe filtration. Total volume of water filtered: about 30 gallons. Use it when you need it, but beware of its limits.

Did you let the water settle for an hour at least ? Did you attempt any sort of prefilter ? I have found that cheap coffee filters have kept numerous filter brands from having any problems for many years when filtering amounts suitable for hiking and solo camping. I like the T-shirt idea but a good sized hanging sack might work well for an initial prefilter of large quantities of water if you just cannot wait for sediments to settle. Or maybe place two or more sacks inside of each other if your not in big rush and want to protect what is probably the most critical bit of gear you have ...
