Ranked #769 - Weeklong Packs (Over 4500 cu in)
May 17, 2004
Dont believe the number. At $175, this pack appears to be the most expensive model we tested, but it comes with a 3-liter Source hydration reservoir (a $25 value). Of the suspension, our equipment editor says, The belt securely wraps my hips with no gaps, helping this lumbar pad stick to my back without slipping. The framesheet and two stays readily support a 45-pound load. However, our biggest hikers wished for more hipbelt and shoulder padding.
Compression and arm mobility equal the best in the field, though the ride swayed a bit in gusty weather below Mt. Rainier. The J-shaped panel zipper provides easy access, and a mesh shove-it pocket accommodates bulky items like a wet tent. The hook-and-loop torso adjustment is a snap, and a womens model expands the fit range. Downside: Capacity is average, and there are no pad straps to absorb extra gear. The Source bladder is tough and taste-free, but we recommend upgrading the bite valve to the Rapid Valve ($4) to improve flow and avoid leaks.
