strange oversight

I like outdoor clothing that is both functional and great looking - so you can wear it for a hike and then out at night in town. That's why I paid so much for this jacket. But here's a strange thing - the two front pockets are made out of mesh, so they offer no protection from the wind and cold that come up from the bottom (and there is no waist cinch to tighten it up around your waist) So the wind and cold comes up from the bottom and your hands freeze! It is really annoying not to be able to put your hands in your pockets to warm them up. I find this a very strange oversight by the designers, and it bothers me every time i wear the jacket, so I find I haven't been wearing it as much as my normal cotton hoodies, which keep my hands warmer. Too bad.

You'll find this to be the case (mesh pockets) in some of Arcteryx's softshells too (Gamma MX, for one). It makes a little more since in the softshells since you can cinch the the hem to resist drafts, but unzip the pockets to dump a little extra warmth. Fugitive doesn't have a hem cinch and it is harness-length short. The design functions much better in climbing and alpine situations, since it does sit just at the harness, and not bunching up underneath. All-in-all, the design is a little compromised if you are just looking for a casual hoody in a tech fabric offering. I do love how the Wind Pro hardface layers, and this continues to be one of my favorite technical mid-layer fabrics. Great hood too.
