Inexpensive... That's about it.

I too was lured to this jacket by the tiny pack size, low weight, and very reasonable price. Seemed too good to be true. Well, it is. This jacket will protect you from minor storms at best (when new). I have one that is 3 months old, basically sitting in my pack until the snows came, very little to no wear. Well, this week the snow came in hard during a night hike. Wet, heavy stuff that falls fast and melts on you just as fast. "No Problem", I figure as I zip on my PreCip. Within 15 minutes of heavy, wet snow (about an inch on our pack covers), the shoulders and hood were totally wet out, and leaking badly. Skip this for anything but casual, summer use. You can't afford to be in the winter backcountry with an inferior, leaking shell such as this!

This is a LIGHT rain shell made for LIGHT rain conditions. I see that BC no longer lists it as waterproof, which was misleading. If I was heading for possible snow I would get a true hardshell, and not this uber light weight. Do your research.

Forgive my dumbass, but what's the difference in terms of water protection from a snow storm and light rain? Shouldn't a shell keep you dry in both circumstances?

My precip jacket has survived 4 years of abuse and 2 AT thru-hikes. The pit zips stopped unzipping and I wore off the seam seal tape around the shoulders, but it still keeps me pretty dry.

I have worn mine on more than a few all day rainfests and never had a leakage problem. I redo the DWR once a season.

I agree with James C. Watts. The word "waterproof" is false advertising if the jacket is not waterproof. Where is it written that the maker can claim anything they wish and we then must mentally revise it all based on selling price? That's absurd. We have other terms, such as "water resistant" and "wind breaker" that the maker can claim, but we should soundly drub anyone who claims a jacket is waterproof when it isn't. A waterproof jacket should keep you dry in a one hour pouring rain. If not, it is not waterproof, but some level of water resistant.

The description says "waterproof", I think this means water can't penetrate. The usual term for this performance is "water resistant".

Dude- if you're hiking and a snowstorm pops in and it dumps an inch- YOU'RE WEARING A RAIN JACKET. Throw on a softshell and a beanie, you weenie.

Snow storm? This is a light rain jacket.

Seriously, James C Watts sounds like the sort of person who'd die in a rainstorm if he's using the Precip for "Winter backcountry use." Good gravy.

This jacket is obviously not for use in heavy snow. This comment doesn't help anyone. This jacket works for what it is designed for, lighter "warm weathered" rain.
