"GREAT Summer Tent" - Review of Mountain Hardwear Hammerhead 2 Tent 2-Person 3-Season
I'm a man with a tent for each season & each reason. I picked up a Hammerhead last year to replace an older tent used for general warm weather camping. And its a great one for this purpose. The Hammerhead's unique feature is a huge, zip-out portion of the tent's roof that exposes netting which allows you to stargaze from within a bug-proof shelter, and from within your sleeping bag. Pretty nice to fall asleep to a great view of the stars & milky way on a warm night. When the night air cools down, just zip the thing shut. It then holds heat like any other larger tent. And it is a larger tent, one of its other advantages. For its size, it’s roomy with space for gear and a dog to spread out. The Hammerhead is pretty good against wind. It’s relatively tall, but when staked down -- especially with the fly's extra tie-downs – it’s a secure tent in a desert wind. The one odd, downside of the tent is that insects seem to love the Hammerhead's view, too, and quickly accumulate in the netting. If you mistakenly leave the doors open, you can soon have dozens of mosquitoes, flies or other flying insects buzzing the netting, futilely trying to escape. So keeping the doors closed is important.
