Superhero Winter Kicks

These shoes rock. When you strap them on - and I say strap them on because the quick and easy lacing system cranks them on tight - your feet suddenly morph into indestructible tools made for movement. I use them up here in Alaska as wintertime running shoes. On hardpacked snow (roads, established snowmachine trails) I wear the shoes alone and they provide excellent traction. If I'm running on less-established snowmachine tracks or in a bit of fresh pow, I strap on my 22" snowshoes. The rubber toe cap and plastic heel stabilizer means they accept the snowshoes beautifully. They have an incredible amount of lateral stiffness for a low-cut shoe and this - combined with the light weight (compared to boots)- translates into less foot and ankle fatigue on both ascents and descents. I ordered them a size up (12) from my normal size (11) because I plan to use them exclusively in the winter and wanted room for both a sock liner and a mid-heavyweight sock for the ultimate in warmth. The fit is perfect; temps have been well below zero for a few weeks now and my feet have been toasty with this combo. Moisture is not an issue at this time of year since everything is frozen solid, but I expect the Gore-Tex will come in handy when things start to thaw out next summer. For what it's worth, I highly recommend these shoes to anyone looking for a well-constructed, warm, comfortable, wintertime running shoe that will also work with ultralight snowshoes.
