Ranked #346 - Men's Down Jackets
January 17, 2012
Ok, so I hunted around for a few jackets before snagging this. I looked at the Patagonia Fitz Roy, the Rab Neutrino Plus, and this one. This jacket is packed with down. Its seriously baffled and is incredibly warm. Unfortunately its been pretty warm up here in the Northeast but I have used it down to about 5 or 10 with minimal layering underneath it, and it is totally sufficient. I also bought this jacket to keep me warm bouldering during the winter. Its like a sleeping bag out there, great stuff in the 20s with a T shirt or thin layers underneath. Yes this sounds overkill, but I get really cold and like to stay super warm while I recover.
The downside is that the lighter of the 2 materials used does leak feathers. Its not horrendous like some jackets I have seen, but it does leak through the fabric. The more durable fabric used on the sleeves and seat is burly and will hold up to some serious abuse. The zipper is a bit annoying too, not a huge deal but something to get used to for sure. The seams dont seem to leak all that bad. Overall I have been pleased. I needed something really heavy to use for mid-winter climbing as a belay/inactive stay warm jacket, as I do have a light weight down jacket. Its perfect for the really cold days and, as I mentioned, super warm.
