Patagonia Merino 3 Midweight Zip-Neck Top - Women's

Not as warm as expected

By Ranked #13 - Women's Midweight Long Underwear - Tops January 16, 2012

I am converting a lot of my baselayers to wool and wanted to try Patagonia merino 3 to see how it compares to other wools. Don't like the feel of the fabric...and..it really isn't warm. It might be a good spring or fall layer but will not be part of my winter layering. Icebreaker or Ibex are much warmer and have a nicer feel next to the skin.

Well, how warm it is really depends on the fabric weight. Patagonia website says merino 3 is made with 220g/m2 merino fabric. Some of the Icebreaker's base layers (Olympia, for example), is 260g/m2, so it'll be warmer than the Patagonia piece. I do agree that Icebreaker and particularly Ibex woolies feel much softer on the skin than the merino 3, which has a 20% poly content.
