I was torn choosing between The North Face Base Camp and the Patagonia Black Hole, but stumbled across the Marmot Long Hauler and was intrigued enough to make it my choice. For one thing, this one is designed with more zip pockets inside and out compared to the other two, and i like the minimalist approach of designing the backpack straps so they can double as shoulder and hand straps. The compression straps on the XL version (which the Black Hole doesn't have) and locking zippers are also a great feature. The build quality is superb, though I wish Marmot used the waterproof material for the bottom as well. If you're going on an expedition or hard core wilderness trip, the Base Camp is a classic and probably still your best bet, but consider this one for more 'normal' global travel where toughness, practicality and good looks all count equally.
