Ranked #501 - 3-Season Tents
September 26, 2011
I've used this on several over-nighters now and a couple car camps, but up until this last weekend, my SAC bargain hadn't been seriously tested. While camped in the North Cascades we had a nasty little storm system blow in on our final night. Wind gusts were easily upwards of 50 MPH, and they pelted my tent with heavy PNW rain for hours. Finally, around day light, some rain dripped in through the vestibules, especially on the side facing the wind. I had set up to face the wind with the foot end of the tent, but the wind came in from a different direction the final night...lousy mountains and their unpredictable weather. All in all I am very pleased with my hundred buck tent. The fact that it survived that one night alone totally pays for the tent and then some. It looked like the tent was going to implode on itself, but it stood its ground. If you know it's going to storm and can set up with account for wind direction, I think it can can handle some hefty storms. I'll be sure to take a few extra stakes to guy it down better next time.
As for the product itself, it might be a 2 person tent if you are sleeping a pair of professional cyclists or perhaps horse jockeys, but for normal folks, it would be a bit tight. I make other sacrifices (less clothes) to account for the extra weight of this over most ultra light one person tents. I like extra living space and the vestibules are priceless, especially while trying to pack up the rest of your stuff that shouldn't get wet in a storm. The included footprint is a nice bonus, but I wish it was a bit bigger.
