Great if it fits you

By Ranked #807 - Men's Synthetic Insulation Jackets November 22, 2010

I own two other montbell jackets, the UL and the Alpine down. Both are great jackets. I figured this would be a nice addition for more active approaches, sweat, water, etc.
This product is well designed, but does not fit me at all. I am 6'2" 165 lbs, typical climber build. I ordered a large and there was way too much room in the body. Chest and arms were great, but enough bulk in the front to cover a pregnant woman... sent it back for a medium. Medium has good dimensions in the mid section, chest and shoulders is way too cramped. Fit well with a T shirt under but any other layers restricted motion. The forearm area in particular was super tight.
I am constantly plagued by fit issues with gear and am stuck somewhere in the med/Lg size. If you are like me, I wouldn't recommend this at all. The same holds true for my UL. Its great as a layer, excellent backcountry tool, but it has way too much room in the mid section.
I'll likely be trading this up for an arcteryx atom... better fit and if you look... I think it has less weight too.

Update: I wandered by a gear store that happened to have the regular thermawrap parka. I tried it on and found it to be a much better fit simply because of draw string to seal up the waist. Also tried on the Arcteryx Atom SL and I thought the Montbell was a better fit. Regardless, I ended up snagging the thermawrap parka and I like it a lot so far. Very wind resistant, light, has a hood, and its super warm. In comparison to the Down Inner parka, which I also have, the thermawrap parka seems to be far more substantial and also bulkier. Maybe if you didn't fit in the thermawrap BC like me, check out the parka, it might still be a bit bulky, but its got a draw string so you can tighten it up around the waist and keep the heat in.
