We just used two pairs of SPT Lockable Tie Down Straps to protect our two sea kayaks while traveling. Our trip involved some overnight stops at motels, leaving our car and kayaks in the motel parking lots. We also have two pairs of the loop-type cable locks, which have always been a minor pain to use, requiring some gyrations to eliminate the slack in the cables. We left them home on this trip. Tie down straps must be used, anyway, to hold the kayaks to the roof rack. The SPT tie down straps are no more trouble to use than the straps that came with our kayak J-cradles. The bonus is that they add a layer of protection from theft. I'd recommend them to other kayakers.
