Back to the original question: Why not just use NiMh AAA?

By Ranked #173 - Lighting March 30, 2010

No one seems to be able to answer the important question here: Spend $10 on a 4-pack of NiMh AAA that you can use with other things (and work with any NiMh recharger) or spend $30 for a proprietary pack that can be used with nothing else? If BD or anyone else can somehow demonstrate that the NRG2 doubles the lifespan of 4 NiMh rechargeable AAA then it might make a compelling argument...otherwise don't waste your money.

I have been looking at this and hoping for a USB charging solution. Black Diamond's web site and available instructions and pictures reveal nothing however. If anyone can provide info on how to charge this power pack using USB I'd appreciate it.

I have the NRG2 and a Brunton solar power pack. The advantage is that there is a USB to Plug adapter that fits. my Brunton gives me 1- 1.5 extra charges and so far I havent seen a USB charger for AAs. also I have been using this pack of over 9months of both total discharge and running as a spare light while plugged in and havent seen any decrease in battery life like you see with rechargable batteries. so it looks like to me that the over all lifetime is worth the price.

I am thinking the same thing. I can buy the rechargable batteries for about $10 to $15 dollars and use them for any device I want.
