I have enjoyed the Patagonia Synchilla Alpine Hat so far. I haven't been able to use it for strickly backpacking yet, which is why I purchased it. I have used it around town and for running on really cold mornings and have been pleased. The large is really big and I would recommend a normal size head order a medium.
