First let me say, I really like a lot about SmartWool and its products. I have relied on it as my primary baselayer in cool and cold weather for alpine skiing, xc skiing, running, etc. and it has performed extremely well. However, I started noticing small holes appearing in all four of my SmartWool baselayers (tops and bottoms) after running them through the washer/dryer on delicate/low heat. Since discovering the holes I've started air drying them after running them through the wash, however this level of care is a little hit higher than I would prefer for a baselayer. I have decided to switch over to Capilene as I would prefer a more easy care garment.

i agree with ryan 110%. wool is the way to go, synthetics are stinky, chafey, balley, and they do not perform nearly as well. im a veteran ice climber who has tried every single layering system to gain an advantage humanly possible.......go organic! wool wool wool.

Capilene requires more care. You can toss these in the washer and dryer no problem. Capilene is more prone to melting/burning, shouldn't be dried in the dryer, and tends to pill with wear and become rough. I also find capilene traps in smells, and needs frequent washing. I've worn it all, swear by wool.
