Solid Pack

I've been skiing with the Alias for 1 full season- primarily slackcountry in Europe. The bag is a shadow on your back... when you take it off, the only thing you notice is your back is colder. Loaded lightly (Avi-gear, water, camera, and a layer)it is nearly empty with plenty of room for all your friends crap- a slight drawback. As a daypack, I think there are better options.. BD Covert. The single cavernous compartment of the Alias swallows small items and is not easy to access. To open the compartment one has to undo the top lid, undo the top compression strap, and undo the slide lock. With gloves on, this can be difficult. The top lid does keep your essentials organized and the avi-gear pocket is convenient. If you want a lightweight touring pack, this is probably perfect. It is small enough to be light, even fully loaded, yet large enough to carry everything you need for 1 overnight or multiple day hut trip. Overall, the pack is great. It offers more flexibility than smaller packs, but that flexiblity comes at the price of easy access.
