I haven't sweated it up on a backcountry hike yet in this shirt, but it has proved itself in the cold weather around town. It's a great layering piece under my jackets and has proved to be quite warm. Plus it fits so well (5'11", 165 - size M) I often forget it's even there. The sleeve length is perfect and doesn't stick out of my long sleeve shirts. This has begun to prove itself to be my "go to" base layer in the winter. Pretty good for my first Smart Wool piece!

How cold are we talking here? I'm heading off to a place with avg night temps of 5'C and avg day temps of 15'C. It's likely to snow, rain or be very windy and I will be packing it in each of these conditions. I am wondering how thick the garment is - Is this suitable as a base layer too?
