I purchased, and returned, four pairs of boots over the course of a year. I am very particular about what I need/ like in my hiking boots.
I have narrower heels and a broader forefoot, with the area around my toes is wide, which means I'm prone to losing my pinky toenails. My big toe turns up, which means I'm prone to bruising on my big toenails. I need hiking boots with a larger toebox, but not a larger boot that will cause my heel to slip.
I found the ideal boot for my feet in the Lowa Renegade. They are a mid-weight hiking boot, perfect for lighter backpacking trips and day hikes. Broke in easily. Replaced the insole with spencos to improve comfort. I'm very pleased with these boots!
A note on sizing--they run true to size. Order your proper size; do not order down a half size! Hiking boots are supposed to be roomy in the toes to prevent toe jams on downhills. I wear a street shoe 8 and am happy with my size 8 Lowa's.
