Redder is better

The size and weight are more than the black diamond ion I was used to carrying but more is relative whenyou are counting an ounce or two. The lighting is far superior to the ion and does not eat batteries as quickly. Also the availaility of aaa batteries is better than a poprietary lithium ion. What I really like about the light, and my reason fo buying it is the red filter. Using it with the red filter has NO impact on your night vision. Star gazing in Yellowstone within minutes of using the light last week I was glad I paid the extra for the little red piece of plastic that flips down over the lens. In reality the price difference for the standard model versus this means Petzl makes more money for adding the 30 cent piece of plastic but it IS worth it
