Its main compartment is split up between a Laptop sleeve and a small main compartment1 I couldn't even fit a 1/2 inch binder in it! It's better for anything but school!

Not sure which pack you're talking about, but my Surge has a solid 4-5" of space in it's center compartment, with my XPS1330 inside it's slipcase in the rear pocket and a bajillion cords/chargers in the front pocket. It'll easily hold two 2" thick course books plus a notepad, and still have room left to stuff my parka in on top of that.
