Golite Galaxy

By Ranked #466 - Weekend Packs (3000-4500 cu in) April 11, 2005

I do a fair bit of long distance ultralight backpacking, and have used a Golite Trek pack for a couple seasons due to weight considerations. The weight difference between the Golite and my frame packs is enough to carry 3-4 days more food and stay out longer. Problem was, the Trek just didn't provide enough support, and I got sore from it after a few days. The Galaxy provides the best of both - it has a stiff frame that works great, and still is really light. I used it last week to for a canyon hike in Utah and it performed admirably. I intend to use it this summer when I hike the Colorado Trail end to end again. I can go out for 4-5 days with this pack and keep the total weight down around 30lb including a liter of water and filter. (I carry about 1lb of food per day) It's not as big as some frame packs, but the tent attaches outside and that leaves room for more inside. Plus, the smaller size forces you to pack intelligently and saves weight accordingly. If you like the ultralight mode, this is the best choice out there.
