Fred,
I too was deeply offended by the writer's original description. To wit,
1. Is "harder" really an appropriate adjective to describe bombing a country? In fact you can't come up with an adjective that works for both meanings because in this case "bombing" and "bombing" are homonyms, not synonyms as would be required for such a literary device.
2. "pick your prom date up in these super fat powder beasts". It should be "ON these super fat powder beasts".
3. The author calls these skis "boats" and compares them to a car known for it's soft suspension, but subsequently describes the skis as stiff, so which one is it?
4. "when the powder's been driven into the ground" - is that an attempt to revisit the car motif or the bombing motif? Weak.
Sincerely,
Float

Hi float, Whoever you are, you're an idiot. Contrary to your claims, "bombing" is not a homonym of "bombing". It is, as most first graders could tell you, the same word. Perhaps you're not familiar with the rhetorical practice of metaphorical extension - this is when words are used outside of their conventional context in order to achieve a particular descriptive, sometimes ironical effect. Note that such innovative uses can themselves become conventional. For instance, when I call you a cunt or a cock, everyone knows that I'm not using these words in a literal sense. I'm simply saying you are a cunt and a cock. I'm not inventing new words. These words aren't becoming homonyms for themselves. They've simply been given new meaning. This is precisely the case with words, like bombing, that have entered into the skiing lexicon. The original description of these skis was quite entertaining. The current one is okay too.
