Gear Review
Not bad, but not amazing

This is a solid, well built headlamp. The double battery packs on the strap help distribute the weight, but four AA batteries weighs a lot no matter how you look at it. Using lithium AAs (lighter, longer lasting) instead of alkalines or rechargeables makes a big difference. The light is bright and the adjustable settings are useful if you want to save battery power. The red led is not very bright. I would have liked it to be bright enough to see by, but it's really only good enough to see things that are close to your face, like a map or a compass, or that branch at face level that you didn't see until it was too late to avoid headbutting it. The only other negative comment I have about this headlamp is that the mount, though tiltable, does not tilt far enough down, so I have to position the thing way down on my forehead to get the right angle. Maybe it's the shape of my head or just my height (6'1"), but this seems like a make-or-break kind of design decision, and Brunton didn't quite make it. I'm keeping this headlamp for use around the house because it's good enough for that job and it seems to have good battery life, but I won't be taking it on any long night hikes or backpacking trips.
