Sweet glove, but not for the chronically cold...

By Ranked #1450 - Ski Gloves January 29, 2009

This is a pretty sweet glove- it looks wicked cool and most people are instantly jealous of them. While I have some gripes, it's not the glove's fault. It's just that my fingers have defined new degrees of "frozen" just about every time the mercury dips below 15F. I have some chronically cold hands that get so cold I can barely move my fingers by mid run, even when my fingers have been curled up in my palm for the length of the lift.

The first time I used these for a full day of skiing in about 15-20F my hands did OK. I used them with an underarmor liner (in addition to the fleece liner in these), and felt good for most of the day. Got a bit cold by the end but tolerable. The next day, temperature at base was about 5F and the entire day was bitter. By the end of my first run my hands were useless. Every finger was so cold and stiff I cold barely pick my skis up off the ground to run into the lodge in search of some mittens. I gave up my crusade to find a glove that'll work for me on the real cold days, and bought a pair of Swany full leather mittens. Those, with a hand warmer in my palm, did the job for the rest of the day. My hands have never felt better in super cold weather than with the mitts.

So, my suggestion for people with chronically cold hands will now forever be, give up and get yourself some mittens. I'll still use my Heli gloves for moderate days, but the mittens can't be beaten on the snot-freezing days.

That being said- my friends who don't have the same problem with their hands as me tried the gloves, and loved them. It's a sick glove - it's durable, warm and stylin'. But if you're like me, give up. It's mitten time.
