I just got this tent as a wedding gift and was reading the tags that came with it. The tags say you can use the rain fly and the foot print as a light shelter. Has any one done this? Is it pretty sturdy? Any information on this would be awesome.

I would get comfortable backpacking with the full tent before rigging as just the fly and footprint. While it may be lighter for those going fast and light, you need to be prepared to deal with the extras that sleeping just under the fly entails. The actual tent will only add a few pounds and unless your going for a world record would add some peace and mind to your load knowing you have an enclosed shelter with you.

I've done that kind of setup with other tents before, including other SD tents, and it's quite solid. Just make sure that the footprint is fully stretched flat and that everything is staked and guyed out, and bingo.

Well you definitely could use them as a shelter, just think about it. The footprint as the base and the rain fly overhead as the main cover. Definitely not as sturdy as the main tent, but with practice stringing it up properly, it will work better than just a tarp.
