I have to order a parka for a trip this summer to theNorth Cascades National Park, They told us to order a PARKA , however i am having trouble with what a parka really is. I live in Florida, so it is kinda difficult to just go to the store for one. Does this jacket fall under the qualifications of "parka". I need this piece of gear to be right because im going to be up there for 9 days. And they asked for the parka to be either "down" or " synthetic".... does this qualify as synthetic, if not, then what is??

Thanks So much.!!!

Parka actually referes more to the fact that the jacket is insulated in someway. Without insulation the jacket would be referred to as a shell. Columbia has great parkas in the sens ethat we specialize in the interchange technology which allows you to effectively have 3 coats in one as you can remove the liner to wear seperately from the shell or combine them for ultimate warmth and weather proofness. This parka is one of our most popular and would suit your needs and the description of the gear needed for your trip. Enjoy!

haha hello JD, in my experience "parka" is just a fancy word for a jacket with extended length, so they have better protection and insulation values....and as for the insulation, this is synthetic...sythetic and down are the only two type of insulation. "down" is when the jacket is insulated essientialy with bird feathers, and "sythetic" is when the jacket is insulated with engineered fabrics or materials. for a great compairison guide of Down VS. Synthetic go here: http://www.sierratradingpost.com/lp2/down-v-synthetic-guide.html im a fan of synthetic, and this jacket IS a parka and is very warm, probably what you are looking for. -hope this helps
