This is my first purchase of a backpacking tent so this might be a stupid question but when i look at the picture of the tent without the fly there is a lot of open mesh. Is that what the tent looks like set up, like everyone can look in your tent or is there something to cover that up without totally the whole with the fly?

If you are concerned with the mesh just drape the fly over the tent & fold sections up to view the sky at nite. I own this tent and it is great! I would say it is a bit on the heavy side for longer trips but overall good!

Actually, it's not so much the case with 4 season tents. Three season tents, however, utilize the mesh as ventilation so as to keep condensation at bay while camping in the summer. The fly covers the tent and offers wind/weather protection, but yeah, the top of the tent body is mostly mesh to increase ventilation.

That's usually how it works. You have to have the fly up to fully cover the tent.
