My head measures 23" and I know the large is supposed to be 23 1/4". Would I be better off getting the xl instead?

Sizing information for head circumference is as follows: * Medium fits 22-1/2 in. * Large fits 23-1/4 in. * X Large fits 24 in.

There is clip in back of the hat to adjust the headband, so you could tighten up the looser fit on your head.

That is up to you. The hat is going to break in and stretch out a little. The XL may fit a little loose, but it also depends on how much hair you have. If you like a snug fitting hat, just get the Large and it will stretch and be more comfortable after a while.
