I was hoping this would be a good mid layer under a technical hard outer shell, will the windstopper be a disadvantage as a midlayer?

no not disatvantaged, a little unessecary because your shell should be windproof, but thats itThe only disadvantage will be breathability if this fleece is worn underneath a hard shell your perspiration now has two membranes to get through before escaping. Great midlayer styles without a membrane include the momentum, pumori or khumbu.
