this is considerbly thick for a shell fabric, but its tough as nails because of it...and you can use anything as an underlayer, its a shell with no insulation so you can dial in your level of warmth to fit your activity, im a fan of using a noth face apex bionic softshell jacket as an underlayer for all my winter/fall activities
