I am trying to buy a wrist GPS for my handicapped son. He is not able to use the computer. Will this Forerunner 301, or any other, give him maps, miles, etc., without hooking up to a computer?

This will do everything but true maps. The map screen shows a track of where you've been and any waypoints that are around your location and that is all. If you want a true looking map check out the GPS units on the previous page and look for the mapping option that is listed as "Yes" in the specs, located in the upper right side of the page.
