What are the differences (if any) between the 07-08 and 08-09 models? I've tried on the 08-09 model in the store and it is a perfect fit, however am considering the earlier model for budgetary purposes. Do they fit similarly? Should I expect the same performance from both models?

Yeah, most changes were only cosmetic and not really performance orientated.
