it seems like a 2 piece shovel is pretty standard, but does a 1 piece like the black diamond deploy offer any advantage?

Technically this is still a 2 piece. The difference here is that the 2nd part (the shaft) slides into the shovel for storage so it never needs to come out. The advantage is a very quick assembly and a slight reduction in weight.

The design of the deploy is amazing you get the benefits of a one piece but the compactness of a two piece. The deploy will assembly quicker than any two piece.
