what about for a hiking type boot in winter say walking 2 to 3 miles. Have tried other pac type and they are not suitable for walking.. rubbing on the shin, not good support, etc. was thinking of the new north face stuff like the 4 shadows or ice storm not rubber bootoms but a lot more flexable

Doug Crofts,Fitting winter boots is a difficult and timely process. The good thing is once you find a boot that works it is worth it's weight in gold. What boots have you tried so far? Both the Salomon Scrambler or The North Face Four Shadows would be a great option for you. Because you have been experiencing rubbing on the shin I would avoid the Ice Storm, it uses the BOA lacing system. When lacing the boots you will want it snug through the forefoot, this will lock your heal in place. At the top it should be more relaxed allowing the shin to flex forward while walking. Bottom line: without seeing your foot I would go with the Four Shadows boot. When lacing them tie a surgeons knot between eyelets 2&3 and 3&4. There are a lot of sites that show how to tie a surgeons knot if you have not seen it done before. If you have any follow up questions please let me know.Mahalo, Sumo
