my husband is 6'3" and 180 lbs. he is thin framed. and wears a 34" waist. Would he need a L or XL? he normally wears XL in polo shirts and button down dress shirts.

I would recommend an XL due to what you said about his shirt he wears. Because with sleeve length, the same rule applies to coats- he won't want his sleeves to rise up every time he reaches. I am 6'2" and 200 and the large fits me. The chest area is actually a little big and the sleeves are perfect.
