I don't know how well it will hold up in negative temperatures, but it should be fine as long as it isn't exposed to the elements (snow, sleet, etc.) for too long and you keep it close to your body when you aren't using it. As for a map of NY, check out the Garmin US Topo map for the Upper East Coast.
