I'm a 29-30 waist and have average size legs. how "relaxed" is the fitting? i like to be comfortable, but still don't want to feel like i'm swimming while standing. any advice from the average-to-thinner crowd?

I would get a small and I think you will be good to go. I have a 31-32 waist and I am in between a small and a medium. Great fit for climbing and working outside. Hope this helps.
