I'm 5'7" and 145 pounds and don't know if I should get a M or L? Don't want it to be too big or too small??

Medium. I'm about the same size as you and I'm a north face medium pretty much across the board.I would get a large because I'm 5'4" 140 lbs and I have had both a medium and a large. The large would cover your butt more but the Medium rides up and even some sweatshirts show underneath the coat when you try to layer.
