Is it a bad idea to get mountain biking shoes if I am going to be doing mostly road biking? I will be doing both and don't want to have to buy two pairs of shoes. What is your best suggestion? Or do I really need two pairs of shoes?

You can use mt. biking shoes for road riding but, because of the slick sole on road shoes I would not recommend road shoes for mt. biking. the only drawback on mt. bike shoes is that there is often more material at the toe of the shoe and depending on your set up when turning your front wheel your tire can actually end up rubbing on your the toe of shoe when your pedals are horizontal. It hasn't turned out to be a big problem for me because unless you are going really slow you usually are not turning sharp enough to make this happen.
