So if my head is 22 in. I need a small? the size chart says medium i believe. but from what i hear that is incorrect.And also, does anyone else know if the brown canvas makes it less scratchable?

I would stick with the medium. The sizing chart is actually pretty accurate. Im not sure if the canvas would scratch less. But the helmet wont scratch up that much anyway unless your head keeps bouncing off rocks.
