What is the best way to keep the white version clean? Is it necessary to wash it regularly before it "appears" to have dirt, and will this damage the down?

There are detergent that are made specifically for down products. For example, there's Nikwax's Down Wash. But frequent washing of down will deteriorate the product, so use with care.
