I am planning on using these in Northern UT (Wasatch and Uintas) ofr hiking and climbing in snow, with some occasional climbing. Would these bo overkill?

Definitely not. In fact, you may want to invest in some gaitors. for deep snow. If you're going to be climbing even a little bit, I'd recommend something of this nature. The review above stated "They also fit perfectly as my winter hiking/mountaineering boot. Secure on the feet and sharp grip in the sole". You should be set.
