this may be a stupid question but is there any other type of ventilation system other than the fan? I can't really tell from the pictures and was wondering in case the fan were to break.

Agree! Used the lens without fan and failed badly. Fan is a must and Smith is the best I have seen. Looked at others with fan but Smith seems the best so far. If others find something better, please come here and let me know too. Thanks!

Not really. The lens doesn't have the vents in the front like most do, so if the fan breaks you're SOL.
