How should I decide if I need a left zipper vs. Right Zipper bag? It's never been a big deal to me.

Those are really functional ways to choose a zipper side. The more romantic answer (and the one I abide by) is the opposite of your expected snuggle buddy's bag. Not that they're likely to actually be compatible, but you get lucky (doubly so, really) sometimes.

the above comment about being left or right handed is one point... but in my opinion it's more important to consider which side you like to sleep on if you lie on your side. Lying on a zipper all night could be less comfortable for you!

If it's not a big deal, then just pick one.Well either one will work. The correct answer is if you are right handed get a left zip and if you are left handed get a right zip. The reason for this is it is easier to reach across your body to unzip/zip the bag.
