yes you can jurry rig it horizontal, it was for sure not designed with a snowboard in mind. I just pulled out the gray tab at the bottom all the way, renforced it with some duck take and put a caribiner on the end of it. From there you just wrap you board on there on tie a strap from the caribiner to the straps up top. It held on really tight and the pack was perfect for me to spend the whole day in the backcountry.
