I am doing a 7 day kilimanjaro hike - the patagonia down sweater is lightweight!, layer-able, packs small --- downside = looks, chest bulk. I do like RetroX jacket look and possible comfort feel. however, it is 8 oz. heavier... which may be a warmer layer/preferable choice? what other lightweight fleeces are warm/recommendable for backpacking? :)

The retroX jacket isn't meant to be a technical fleece. The down sweater is perfect for hiking, as long as it doesn't get wet. You may want to consider putting a shell over the whole thing. In terms of lightweight fleeces, try the patagonia R series. The R2 is awesome, but doesn't do a whole lot in wind without another layer. The R4 is windproof, but isn't as compressible as the down sweater. It will, however, stay warmer when it's wet. Hope this helps!
