hi, if my son is 5 7" and weighs 140 would he be a small or a medium. i want him to be able to wear a sweater underneath, but the jacket looks like it is cut quite wide.

Go for a medium. The jacket is roomy so that layering can be done, but cinch cords at the sides allow for a more tailored look if desired.
